Beautiful Towns of Pangasinan

The age in which we live in is so amazing. I’m specifically talking about technology. There was a time when the most common way you can find out about anything and do research is to go to your local public library. There, you could look at all of the books and read about whatever subject you were interested in. Today that library model is now a smartphone that can fit in your pockets, backpack and/or purse. If you want to know something, all you have to do is Google it  or use whatever internet browser you prefer.

Lately, I’ve been having these small bursts of motivation to find out more about the provinces of Pangasinan. As if you already did not notice, I am a big promoter of PBUSA and its dynamic website, a website that can potentially be a really good source for understanding what the province of Pangasinan is all about. You definitely can find out about the traditions, the people who live there and the Pangasinan community, here in the US and hopefully soon in other countries. This week I want to encourage people to visit the section of the PBUSA website called “Video Profile of Towns and Cities”. Here you will discover some of the most wonderful scenery in Pangasinan as well as the interesting origins of these Pangasinan towns. I’ve only had the pleasure of visiting Pangasinan over 10 years ago, and I can assure you that it is even more beautiful now than it was then; just look at the videos. From my perspective, it looks like it could be a great place to go on vacation.

If you are from the towns of Dagupan City, Lingayen, Alaminos City, San Fabian and San Carlos , you would be very proud of your town after viewing these videos. For all you know, after seeing the videos, you might feel homesick, nostalgic and /or or curios about going there. Enough dialogue; just see for yourself. Just go to www.pbusa1.com and you are on your way to seeing what I am talking about. I am hoping that people who are planning to visit Pangasinan would take a video of their visit and submit that to PBUSA. This way, one can get the perspective of the average Pangasinanses. Of course, you need to edit it. I think that any vacation video over 30 minutes would put me to sleep, unless of course you have mad skills/directorial genius like a Steven Spielberg or JJ Abrams. Wouldn’t that be a great feature on the PBUSA website? Who wants to be the first one?

I know that you probably don’t have a lot of time to sit in front of a desktop computer, but that’s what smartphones and tablets are for. It’s learning on the go. The next time you are waiting, in line, jogging, at a boring party, riding the train etc, go ahead and remember to go to www.pbusa1.com. It’s worth the fifteen minutes or more of discovery, and you don’t need a library card, just a good hotspot.

Indian company to plow in another Php 675 M to expand seed complex

Indian company to plow in another

Php 675 M to expand seed complex

By Abe P. Belena

ROSALES, Pangasinan– An Indian agri-business firm announced today it is expanding the seed processing complex it has built here and is ready to plow in another US $ 15 million (Php 675 M) in the next five years.

The new investment will be on top of its $10 million (Php 450 M) initial investment Prasad Seeds Philippines, Inc. has shoveled into a corn seed processing facility that formally opened for operations on a five-hectare lot in Barangay Salvacion close to the border of Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija.

The announcement was made by Karumanchi Prasad, chairman and managing director of India-based Prasad Seeds and his strategic consultant , former Agriculture Secretary William Dar, in separate interviews at the tail-end of the complex’s inaugural rites.

Prasad said that the new investment will focus on processing quality palay seeds not just for the local market but also for export to other countries. The initial investment is a facility that dries, sorts out, classify, fumigate and package hybrid corn seeds produced by Syngerta in Binalonan and other eastern Pangasinan towns.

India, a SouthAsia country with 1.2 billion consumers, is one of the newest partners in the Asean plus five economic community that started pulling down all trade and investment barriers this year.

In his speech earlier in the day, the Indian investor projected that Pangasinan will become the seed capital of the Philippines and the country is capable of becoming the quality seed hub of the Asia-Pacific region if all stakeholders work together towards that end.

Prasad Seeds is the third seed company based in Pangasinan, coming behind Syngerta based in the town of Binalonan and East-West Seed based in the town of Tayug.

Syngerta is a multinational company whose Asian operations are headquartered in Singapore while East-West is one of the largest hybrid vegetable seed grower and distributor in the country.

Former DA Secretary Dar said that Pangasinan was chosen as the operations base of Prasad because it has wide and fertile agricultural lands that can sustain economies of scale in quality seed production which can later be expanded to neighboring Tarlac and Nueva Ecija.

Speaking for Governor Amado T. Espino, senior provincial board member Alfonso Bince said that with board member Ranjit Ramos-Shahani they will co-author and shepherd to passage a provincial ordinance granting a five-year exemption from real estate taxes to the pioneering seed processing complex.

SP Enacts Law on Unsafe Acts of Bus Drivers

LINGAYEN – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has enacted an ordinance prohibiting and penalizing the unsafe and obstructive acts of bus drivers and inspectors during routine inspection and checking of passenger tickets while their buses are in transit along the national highway in Pangasinan.

Provincial Ordinance No. 27-2015 saw its approval during the SP’s regular session held on July 13.

Board Member Raul Sison who authored the resolution stressed the need for the regulatory measure to protect the lives and limbs of people from probable danger when traveling.

Sison said the ordinance also seeks to prevent unreasonable delay of other road users, particularly in Pangasinan, as he noted the common practice of two bus drivers who habitually stop their transport vehicles on opposite directions in the middle of the road to accommodate alighting and boarding inspectors, causing undue inconvenience.

Persons covered under the ordinance include all drivers and inspectors of common carriers, particularly buses, plying the roads within the province.

Violators will be fined P1, 000 each (driver or inspector) for first offense, P2, 000 for 2nd offenders and P5, 000 and imprisonment of not more than 30 days, or both after due notice and hearing for 3rd offenders.

A second ordinance, Provincial Ordinance No. 26-2015 was also enacted during the same session which provides for the policies and fees of the Carotid Duplex Scan procedure at the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) in San Carlos City. The ordinance amends Provincial Tax Ordinance No. 1-2012, imposing fees for the use of the equipment.

The ordinance, authored by BM Napoleon Fontelera, calls for the use of the Carotid Duplex Scan equipment at the Heart Station of the PPH by a vascular medicine consultant who is a Board Certified Cardiologist, together with a trained vascular technician as required by the Philippine Society of Vascular Medicine.

Fees and charges will cost out-patients and in-patients the amount of P2, 800 and a reader’s fee of P1, 000. Charity and indigent patients who are excluded from paying the reader’s fee will be charged a lesser amount of P2, 500 which will likewise be charged under the Philhealth program.

corn processing plant in Pangasinan

An Indian company is set to formally open on July 15 a US$10 million corn processing plant it has built on a five hectare lot in Salvacion, Rosales, Pangasinan.

The formal opening of the completed project was announced by Exequiel Magsaysay, corporate secretary of the Prasad Seeds Philippines, Inc., a subsidiary of the Indian multinational agri-business company, Prasad Seeds.

In peso term, the investment would be equivalent to Php 450 million by the latest exchange rate. It was the single biggest foreign investment in this Northern Luzon province in recent years.

The last foreign investment before this was sank into the San Roque Multipurpose Dam Project in the town of San Manuel, a facility that generates cheap electricity as well as irrigation water to a wide swat of agricultural lands in Pangasinan and two nearby provinces.

“Prasad Seeds, a global company headquartered in Hyderabad, India is expanding this year worldwide starting in the Philippines,” Magsaysay announced in a letter sent to newsmen invited to witness the opening of the investment project.

Prasad Seeds Philippines is initially providing tolling services such as sorting, grading, processing and packaging corn seeds for another global seed company, Syngenta, Magsaysay added.

Prasad Seeds Philippines is committed in supporting the goal of the Department of Agriculture and the province of Pangasinan at making the province the seed capital of the Philippines, Magsaysay further said.

Two big seed companies are already based in the province.

In the long term, the company aspires to help convert the Philippines as the seed hub of Asia.

A few words from Phil E. Peno

A wise man who lived very long ago named Epictetus (You can guess when he lived by his name; I assure you I have never run into a guy named Epictetus in my whole life)  once said that “Nature hath given men one tongue but two ears, that we may hear from others twice as much as we speak.” I have heard this many times or some variation of it but never really paid attention to it. Now it just visually reminds me that there is more value in listening than talking. A person develops himself by taking in various information and processes them to form thoughts and ideas. You can accomplish that by learning how to listen. Don’t worry, this is not a lecture on listening. It’s just pointing out something that’s very obvious but something we often forget. Next time you are talking to someone, look at their face. Why did our creator, our dear GOD, create us this way? Can you imagine if we only had one ear, and it’s on our forehead, or on the back of our head, or our knees for that matter?

Now that I have creeped you out with those different visuals of where our ears could potentially be, let’s get to why I am pointing this out. You are reading this article because you have discovered PBUSA through Facebook, Twitter, your friend, or family member that texted you or spoke about PBUSA (Pangasinan Brotherhood USA). Or, you could have stumbled upon or intentionally visited the new and improved PBUSA website (pbusa1.com). PBUSA takes pride in its website being unique. There are interesting things to read, but it’s also filled with great videos that make the site very dynamic. Today, I want to bring attention to a feature/section of the website called “Legacy Corner”. Go to this section and take the time to listen to the interviews. This section is trying to

Connect the senior members with the younger generation through the handing down “pearls of wisdom” via three minute video interviews,

  1. Involve all of the members in producing these videos for future generations to learn from, and
  2. Create legacies and provide value to its members and the Pangasinan community.

Have I convinced  you to visit “Legacy Corner”? NO? If not now, maybe later. I guarantee you there is a treasure trove of eye-opening wisdom in this corner that will provide you with a lifetime reward.

Remember, “two ears and one mouth.”
