PANGASINAN FIRST WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR PASSED AWAY
Written by Dan E. Nino
Los Angeles — Teodora Cendaña-Aoanan, affectionately known as Dory and popularly touted as the first highly visible woman entrepreneur in Dagupan City if not the whole province of Pangasinan, passed away on April 2, the eve of the Feast of Divine Mercy. She was 90.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, lawyer Mariano “Naning Aoanan, a former Dagupan City councilor. After his stint as legal attache in Honolulu, Hawaii, the family moved to Los Angeles and settled in Alhambra. The Aoanan patriarch, now 95 resumed his post at the Los Angeles Consulate until his retirement.
Dory was born on Jan. 7, 1926 in Malasiqui, Pangasinan, Philippines. She spent her early years in in Baguio City, Philippines where she met her husband and got married on April 30, 1944.
They initially settled in San Manuel then moved to Dagupan City for greener pastures where their five children: Victoria, Ramon, Mariano, Jr. (deceased), Manuel “Lito” and Virgilio were born.

Her business and mentorship provided a safe, educational environment for young women interested in the workplace at a time when women’s rights were practically non-existent.
When kuya Naning was assigned as the Philippine Legal Attaché in Honolulu, Hawaii, Atchie Dory continued with her beauty salon business in Pearl City, Hawaii and again in Los Angeles, California when Kuya Naning was reassigned here.
The couple were very active in their church, St. Thomas More in Alhambra, California. Atchie Dory was especially active with the parish’s Legion of Mary. They were also active members in the Greater Dagupan Association of Los Angeles Area as well as the Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA

A Message to the Youth/Next Gen of Pangasinan
Member, PB-USA Media Advisory Council
This corner believes that youth means hope. Young people symbolizes the hope of tomorrow. Having said that, the next generation will take over from the now generation. Usually, the now generation is composed of elder people, although there might be some young adults who are with them.
So, this corner would like to call on the youth to prepare not only their own future but to help build the future of the umbrella organization which is the PB-USA. It will be a two-pronged approach to success, side-by-side with the organization by actively pursuing planned ways for the youth to succeed and at the same time actively involving themselves in the affairs of the organization.
How do we do that? If you haven’t chartered your masterplan to success, here’s how! There are three simple ways to do it: earn a high school diploma and a college degree; think outside the box; and actively pursue your goals.
Having access to a good education is essential. And of course, quality education for that matter! You need to earn a high school diploma and as much as possible, a college degree. Other things being equal, the one with a diploma prevails. In one of the hiring sessions of a friend who is the HR manager of a big company, he told me an example of how an applicant with a diploma became the winner. In the lower plantilla positions they were filling out, the choice was down two qualified applicants: one with a high school diploma and the other, no diploma although both of them are experienced for the position and both are very much qualified. When they made their choice, they opted for the one with a high school diploma. The same situation happened when they were left with a choice between two qualified applicants for a supervisory position: both very much qualified but one has no college degree, the other one has. They opted for the college degree holder.
Another way is to think outside the box. People who think and act by the books usually succeed and those who think and act outside the box succeed even more! They are the innovators, the risk-takers, the creative-people, and the people who ask the question behind the question (QBQ) who make things happen beyond the normal way.
We know that William Henry “Bill” Gates, 59, co-founder of Microsoft, succeeded because of his pioneering and innovative acts in building his empire. He went beyond what is normal. He is now the former chief executive & chair of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal-computer software company. Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution who have been criticized for his business tactics considered to be tactics outside the box.
So with Mark Zuckerberg, 30, who made history by building also an empire out of Face Book (FB) which literally phased out My Space, once the by-word of people of all walks of life. He is the chairman & chief executive officer of Facebook, Inc. His personal wealth is estimated to be, as of April 2014, $25.3 billion.
The only eight division boxing champion Assemblyman Manny “the Mexicutioner” Pacquiao was another example of a man who think outside the box. He is flexible and innovative inside the ring. His Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach is another innovative guy who makes sure that Manny’s sparring partners are heavier and taller than him when Manny prepares for a fight with an opponent bigger and heavier than him.
Thinking outside the box is seeing beyond, being creative, using innovative approaches, and going over and above the normal way. If the youth can do it, we will have no problem of the future being taken over by them!
Isn’t thinking and acting outside the box a great propeller for success? I know it’s hard but it pays to be one.
The third way is to actively pursue your goals. Here, one must be organized and motivated. Even with a well-planned project with no constant follow-through and timetable checks will fail. It has to be monitored every now and then and make use of feedbacks to improve the project. It needs constant assertions and innovations to succeed!
The youth are particularly informed of what is really happening in the society and they are also aware of its evils. This is the reason why they have to make themselves heard and the only to do that is by actively participating in the affairs of society. Actually, it starts with actively shaping one’s future, actively participating in the affairs of PB-USA, and thus attaining our joint goals, as an individual and as a contributing member of society.
Together, let’s fight and build our society!
Pangasinan Brotherhood Meet & Greet
Let’s Get Together…Caucus With Us This Sunday, Feb. 7
Dear Kabaleyans,
With all the political rumblings and excitements going on in Iowa and New Hampshire, I do have something more exciting or definitively better for our fellow pangasinenses to enjoy and look forward to this Sunday, February 7, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. That’s with a guarantee !!!
Make this Sunday a leisure day for you. Come and “CAUCUS” with us. Witness the new and enhanced image of Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA, Inc. Be part and freely participate in the new forum of discussions as carefully formulated and planned by our dynamic officers. President Lino Caringal Jr. in full tandem with his EVP Neil Estrada and Hospitality Chairman Bong Soriano will make sure that the meeting will run & finish the course as envisioned.
Call me an “old guard” or a ” senior member” but coming from a long time member, this is the first time that I truly feel and foresee where our organization is going with the collective and cooperative efforts of our members now. Our NextGen’s are coming up beyond expectations and undoubtedly they are the “shakers and movers” of PB-USA. This aura really gives me the feeling of youthfulness.
I certainly want to rejuvenate myself and the best secret pill for that is right here with us. I am a case study for this fountain of youth secret because I am feeling much better, I can think clearly, and I can freely say and share the good things about our organization without reservations or doubt feelings. How about that for a change after so many years with the organization ? Take a quick glimpse of my photo for this column and you will see I can now throw a good smile for you all !!!
Or, would you prefer to stay stagnant or simply stay the way you are – nice and easy. I will respect that. Setting aside camaraderie (because we all have that), I think you will agree with me, at a certain point, that keeping glued within the confines of our age levels will put us in a stand still also within our social surroundings just talking about the good and bad old days, ” how our friends are doing or not doing”, ” he said-she said”, ” pitiful health conditions and body aches”, and often times, a lot of negative and speculative impressions about basically anything that comes along in mind. This, as we all know and experience, will just wind down to what we consciously and unconsciously experience as plain “Tsismis” ( hearsays) Not really healthy and may lead to possible depressions.
Let’s get out of this cocoon and with a firm resolution let’s accentuate the negative into a positive. The cure is here. Come and join us this Sunday , February 7, ar 1:00 p.m. The meeting will promptly start at 1:00 p.m. and close by 3:00 p.m. to proceed to the next session – THE SUPERBOWL”. Keep in mind that our NextGens are all football aficionados and will be there in the meeting. This is something that they planned well with our president, Lino Caringal Jr. They will make sure that this time frame will be followed. Also, there is an open arena to view the Superbowl at our meeting venue. ( Marriot Courtyard)
Please pass on this message and invitation to our general membership however best you can via Facebook , phone calls, and other social media outlets.
See you all this Sunday – Smile !!!!
Sincerely,
Nieves Coquia
Chairman of the Board
[PBUSA-NextGen] WHO HAS NOT SEEN STAR WARS:
WHO HAS NOT SEEN STAR WARS:
THE FORCE AWAKENS (MOVIE)?
Over the Christmas holidays a lot of people were talking about the recently released Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie. The anticipated release of this movie was tremendous. Any science fiction fan and lovers of great stories alike could not wait for the movie to be shown. I have to admit that it was an exciting movie to watch. A new chapter of the Star Wars series was revealed to us and sets the stage for possible interesting plot lines. New generations of fans are being created while maintaining and satisfying the appetite of the die hard original fans. After finally seeing the movie my entire family gave it a “thumbs up”. To us, the hype was justified. The day after seeing the movie it made me think about PBUSA (Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA). The fact that the new year was coming- thoughts about the upcoming year was inevitable.
For PBUSA , I was thinking about, like Star Wars, a new chapter has been revealed. One of the new topics of that chapter for PBUSA is the NEXTGEN. Things within this part of PBUSA are slowly unfolding that will hopefully prove to be amazing. Slowly but surely the young professionals are starting to take an active part in the organization. Current PBUSA NextGen members like Jacqueline Ferrer , Neil Estrada, Dean Lawrence Mandapat and Jesse Mandapat have begun to contribute their precious time to get this organization moving to its goal of consistently being an agent of change for the community of Pangasinanses here in the United States as well as in the Philippines.
Over the Christmas holidays, specifically at the PBUSA holiday party, an act of generosity was made by another PBUSA NEXTGEN member, Christine M. Celestine,, the managing partner of the BACKLINE GROUP along with the company’s other managing partner, Jorge Rodriguez, have generously donated $500 to PBUSA. This was an unsolicited donation. It was unfortunate that she could not attend the event but she was well represented by Jorge Rodriguez and his wife Neisha Hallum Rodriguez. Neisha is a director for Backline Group. It certainly was a great gesture. Whether it’s something small like participating in discussions in the the PBUSA Facebook page to something very significant like this act of generosity, everything matters in the spirit of support for the PBUSA NEXTGEN. Even if small but done consistently, these various gestures, services etc. will someday add up to something magnificent.
Like the movie, Star Wars, the stage is set for what exciting things are up ahead for PBUSA. I hope that we all continue to support the NEXTGEN. As current members, we need to fully grasp that to maintain and thrive on what has been established. We need to care, participate and contribute whatever talents you may have.
In the world of Star Wars, I would say “May The Force Be With You”. We all know that GOD is the true force so I will end by saying MAY GOD BLESS US ALL AND PBUSA!
BE WELL, BE THANKFUL AND BE GREAT!
FERDINAND “ BONG” SORIANO
HAPPY NEW YEAR – PB-USA 2016
Dear Kabaleyans, Fellow Pangasinenses,
HAPPY NEW YEAR and may God’s Grace continue to be with us all !!! Only through HIM will we see the light of PB-USA’s journey of Hope, Faith, Love, Charity, and Mercy. Believing, understanding, and humbly having these virtues in our hearts will our prayers be answered. Let this be our prayer and the bugle call of our 2016 resolution !!!
It’s now official – Greetings and Warm Welcome to the New President -MR. LINO CARINGAL JR and the New Chairman of the Board – MADAME NIEVES COQUIA who will now both be at the helm of leadership in Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA, Inc. – 2016. Welcome to the New Board Members and Executive Cabinet officers !!!
I respectfully pledge my support and pray for our general memberships corresponding support to the leaderships of our new officers. They will need us as we will need them to keep the life of PB-USA breathing and functionally alive as God intended it to be for us to help our kabaleyans.
I can freely share with the members and basically with everyone I know and who knows me that my four (4) years of serving PB-USA was somehow heaven scripted. I say so with a firm belief as a practicing Catholic on how my role on the script came into play. The night prior to our election day in November 2011 was a Pacquiao fight but I simply took the course of spending a time with the Lord in adoration ( exposition of the Blessed Sacrament) at St. Bonaventure Parish in Huntington Beach where they have a weekly saturday adoration and confession at 8:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. I had a confession and prayed for enlightenment more than a prayer to win. In His Living Presence, I submitted my case on what He wants me to do and HIS will be done. It was an uplifting in-dwelling spiritual dialogue and the rest is history as I got elected the next day.
The first few months was a struggle and challenging particularly with the remnants of the old system as we transitioned to our new status as a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) entity. My priority then was the orientation and awareness of what a foundation is all about with the roles of the Board of Directors as policy making body were defined. Unfortunately, some members seemingly did not want any change or acceptance of any compliance procedures. I respected their decisions and positions where they stood on their belief. Compliance is critical and must be treated seriously by officers of an organization. A check-list must be on hand as new officers assume their duties to include filing of annual tax returns to Federal and Franchise Tax Board. Non compliance will result to suspension of the organization.
That being said, please allow this message as a reminder to our various Town & City Organizations to review and prepare their annual tax filings on timely basis. I presume that many of member organizations are on a December 31 Fiscal Year End.
I thank God for giving me a solid and dynamic board members with the able leadership of Mellie Soriano as Chairman of the Board. Together we were able to do what needs to done for PB-USA to thrive .
Thank you to our NextGens for the handling of our 2015 Holiday Interlude Event. Neil Estrada, Bong Soriano, Jacqueline Ferrer, Jesse and Dean Mandapat – Good Job, guys !!!
I am so grateful to so many that I may fail to mention someone in consideration my off and on “ipsus lapsus”. Please allow me to extend a general gratitude and my prayers for you all.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!
Sincerely,
Eddie Ferrer
